What is the Football Foundation machinery grant?

The Football Foundation is the country’s largest sports charity, funded by the Premier League, the FA and the Government. Its Grass Pitch Maintenance Machinery and Equipment grant exists to help clubs buy the kit that keeps natural grass pitches safe and playable all season.

Grants are awarded towards machinery and equipment identified in your PitchPower assessment, and can cover a significant proportion of the total cost (the Football Foundation has offered grants of up to £50,000 towards pitch maintenance machinery). Funding levels and limits change from time to time, so always check the current terms on the Football Foundation grant page before you apply.

Although it is called the Football Foundation, the wider funding routes are not limited to football. Cricket and rugby clubs may also be eligible for support towards grounds maintenance, so it is worth checking your eligibility whatever your sport.

What machinery does the grant cover?

The grant funds grass pitch maintenance machinery and equipment recommended in your PitchPower Assessment Report. That typically includes:

  • Ride-on and pedestrian mowers
  • Compact tractors and utility loaders
  • Aerators, scarifiers and slitters
  • Top dressers and material spreaders
  • Rollers, brushes and drag mats
  • Line markers (as part of a wider application, not on their own)
  • Secure storage such as containers

Who is eligible?

You do not have to be a football club to apply, but grassroots football (or another eligible community sport) needs to be an integral part of what you do. Eligible organisations include:

  • Not-for-profit football clubs and voluntary groups
  • County FAs and professional club community organisations
  • Educational establishments serving the community
  • Registered charities, CICs and social enterprises

Who isn’t eligible

  • Individuals and sole traders
  • Commercial businesses
  • Clubs in the top levels of the football pyramid

For football clubs, only the Chair, Secretary or Treasurer can submit the application.

The recommended package

Every club is different, so we recommend exact models and specification to match your PitchPower Assessment Report, your pitch count and your storage. We can quote for individual items too. A typical grassroots package looks like this.

How to apply for the Football Foundation machinery grant

The application process is straightforward once you know the steps. Here is how it works, and where we can help.

  • 1. Complete a PitchPower inspection

    Before you apply, every pitch you plan to improve needs a PitchPower assessment. The report identifies the machinery and equipment your pitches need. You can only apply for items recommended in that report, so this step matters.

  • 2. Complete the GMA training

    The Football Foundation asks that at least two members of your organisation complete the Grounds Management Association (GMA) Level 1 Football Grounds Maintenance course. It is a short online course, and the certificate is needed before any grant is released.

  • 3. Get two like-for-like quotes

  • 4. Submit your application

    With your PitchPower report, your GMA certificates and two like-for-like quotes in hand, your Chair, Secretary or Treasurer submits the application through the Football Foundation portal. Applications are typically assessed within about ten working days. Once your grant terms are accepted, we plan delivery around your timeline, so tell us your decision date and we will have your machinery ready to go.
